How a round works

European Blackjack typically uses two decks. A round begins by placing a bet. The dealer then deals two cards to each player — both face up. The dealer takes one card face up; the second card is not drawn until the end of the round in this variant.

Each card has a value: numbered cards 2 through 10 count at face value, J, Q and K each count as 10, and an Ace counts as 1 or 11 — whichever is more favourable for the player's hand. The goal is simple: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Going over 21 is an immediate "bust" and the bet is lost.

On their turn, a player can make four main decisions: draw another card (Hit), stop drawing (Stand), double the total bet and receive exactly one more card (Double Down), or separate two cards of the same value into two hands (Split). Once all players have finished, the dealer turns over their second card. The dealer must draw until reaching 17 or higher; on Soft 17 the dealer generally stands.

Main bet types and payouts

European Blackjack offers some additional bets beyond the main wager. Each has a different payout — knowing them makes decision-making easier.

Main Bet

1:1 Payout

Beat the dealer and you win an amount equal to your bet. That means a ৳1,000 bet returns ৳1,000 profit and a total of ৳2,000 back.

Blackjack

3:2 Payout

A natural blackjack — an Ace and a 10-value card in the first two cards — typically pays 3:2. A ৳1,000 bet returns ৳1,500 profit.

Insurance Bet

2:1 Payout

When the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, you can take insurance for up to half your main bet. If the dealer has blackjack it pays 2:1; if not, the insurance bet is lost.

Double Down

Double the Bet

An additional bet equal to your current wager is added and you receive exactly one more card. It is a profitable move when your hand is strong.

Split

Two Separate Hands

If you receive two cards of the same value, you can split them into two separate hands, each with its own bet.

Side Bets

Varied Payouts

Some European Blackjack tables offer side bets such as Perfect Pairs or 21+3. These carry higher payouts but also a higher house edge.

House edge — the story behind the numbers

European Blackjack has one of the lowest house edges among casino games. When correct basic strategy is followed, it generally sits between half a percent and one and a half percent. By comparison, many slot games carry a house edge of 2 to 5 percent.

0.5%–1.5%

Without any strategy (approximate)

2%–4%

Keep in mind that the house edge is a long-term theoretical advantage — it does not determine the outcome of any single hand. Any result is possible in any given round.

Basic strategy for beginners

Basic strategy is a decision framework built on mathematics that tells you the best move for every hand. If memorising the full chart feels like too much at first, knowing a few core principles will already improve your game.

  • Always Stand on Hard 17 or higher. Drawing another card at this point significantly increases the risk of busting.
  • Consider Double Down on Hard 11. The next card has a good chance of being a 10, which would bring your total to 21.
  • Always Split a pair of Aces. Having an Ace in each of two separate hands creates two chances at blackjack.
  • Consider Standing on 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6. The dealer has a higher chance of busting in this situation.
  • Generally avoid Insurance. Over the long run, the insurance bet does not work in the player's favour.
  • Stay flexible on soft hands. A hand containing an Ace (Soft Hand) cannot bust on a Hit, so take the opportunity.

Reading the responsible gaming guidelines will help you keep to a budget and stay within the limits of entertainment.

Live Dealer vs Digital Version

European Blackjack at sporty can be played in two different ways. In the digital version, a RNG (Random Number Generator) deals the cards. It is fast, quiet and lets you play at your own pace — ideal for a quick session at midday or just before bed.

Live dealer tables feature real cards and a trained dealer, with the full table visible via video stream. Tables from major live casino providers including Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live and Ezugi are available in the sporty Casino section.

On live tables there is a set time to make each decision. For beginners, it is worth practising on the digital version first before moving to live.

Digital

  • Play at your own pace
  • Start with low limits
  • Good for practising strategy

Live Dealer

  • Play with a real dealer
  • Multiple table options
  • High-stakes tables available

Table limits — for every budget

European Blackjack tables at sporty are set up with players of different budgets in mind. Low-stakes tables let you start with a very small amount, making them ideal for newcomers. Mid-range tables are the most numerous and are the choice of most players. High-limit tables are also available separately for experienced and high-stakes players, where it is possible to bet a significant amount per hand.

Live dealer tables generally have a slightly higher minimum bet than digital tables, since real-time operating costs are involved. Check the limits before sitting down at a table — it is a good responsible gaming habit.

Reaching higher tiers in the sporty VIP program may give access to exclusive high-limit tables with a much higher maximum bet per hand.

Common Questions

The biggest difference is when the dealer draws their second card. In the European version, the dealer starts with only one card; the second card is drawn after all players have finished their turns. In the American version, the dealer receives two cards from the start and checks for blackjack immediately if an Ace is showing. European Blackjack also typically uses fewer decks.

In online digital games, the deck is reshuffled after every round, so card counting is not effective. Live dealer tables use real decks, but automatic shuffling machines and a large number of decks make card counting practically impossible.

Soft 17 means holding an Ace + 6 — where the total can be either 7 or 17. Basic strategy often recommends a Hit or Double Down depending on the dealer's up card. Since no card can cause a bust (the Ace simply counts as 1), it is a safe opportunity to Hit.

When the player's and dealer's hand totals are equal, it is called a Push. In this case the player's bet is returned — no win, no loss. This applies to both the European and American versions.

Yes, sporty's blackjack tables are fully functional on mobile. In the digital version the buttons are touch-friendly, and the live dealer stream runs smoothly in a mobile browser. The game can also be played through the sporty App on both Android and iOS devices.
